Frequently Asked Questions
Handflute is a wind instrument played using both hands. Simply put, the sound production principle is similar to an ocarina — you cup your hands together leaving a cavity in the palms to form a resonance chamber. By blowing air into this chamber, the air circulates inside and produces sound. To change pitch and play melodies, the basic principle is to alter the size of the resonance chamber between your hands. The larger the chamber, the lower the pitch. Conversely, the smaller the chamber, the higher the pitch.
Playing handflute is not difficult. Based on our experience from past workshops, as long as you follow our method, about 60% of participants can successfully produce a sound within half an hour. Some of the remaining participants can do so after one to two weeks of practice.
In principle, there is no age limit for learning handflute. As long as your hands can form a resonance chamber of sufficient size, you have the potential to play. We recommend children start at around age 7, when their hands have developed enough to form the necessary space.
