Inclusive Music Activities: The Hong Kong Handflute Association's Community Service
There From the Very Beginning
The Hong Kong Handflute Association's nonprofit work has been running since the organisation was founded in 2021 — it wasn't tacked on later as a "corporate social responsibility" wrapper.
Members have visited the PHAB Association Kowloon East Centre, the Family Welfare Society, iMus Academy community music teaching groups, and various elderly care homes, providing voluntary performances or workshops. The format varies with each audience, but the underlying logic stays the same: show up with your hands, let music happen, and don't force a predetermined outcome.
Show Up With Your Hands
This flexibility is a practical advantage of the handflute. No venue preparation needed, no equipment to transport — a space where people can sit down is enough. During elderly home visits, the common room, the dining hall, even a corridor can serve as a performance venue.
