What Is Handflute? Making Music with Nothing but Your Hands
How It Works
Cup your hands together, blow gently, and out comes a whistle.
The principle behind the handflute is straightforward: the player clasps both hands to form an air cavity, places their lips against the gap between the hands, and blows. The airstream vibrates and resonates inside the cavity, producing a clear, flute-like tone. By adjusting the angle of the hands and the degree to which the fingers cover the opening, the pitch changes — from deep and mellow to bright and piercing. A pair of hands becomes a complete instrument. No equipment to buy, no practice room to book, no setup required. You can play anywhere, any time.

The Hong Kong Handflute Association
The Hong Kong Handflute Association was formed in 2021 by a group of handflute enthusiasts and officially registered as a society in Hong Kong in April 2023, making it the world's only organisation dedicated to promoting the handflute. The Association partners with universities, primary and secondary schools, community centres, and commercial organisations, running workshops, short courses, and introductory talks — all in pursuit of one goal: getting more people to know this thing exists, and to try it for themselves.
