Hong Kong Handflute Goes Global: A Historic Performance at Manchester Museum
The First Overseas In-Person Workshop
In May 2025, the Hong Kong Handflute Association held its first overseas in-person workshop at Manchester Museum in the United Kingdom.
"First" is a word that carries weight. Hosting a handflute workshop outside Hong Kong meant facing an audience with zero prior exposure to the instrument, in a different language. The result: the workshop went smoothly, participants managed to produce sound, and some continued practising afterwards. The handflute's learnability held up beyond the language barrier — an important confirmation.
Learnability Beyond Language
The fact that Manchester Museum chose to host this workshop from Hong Kong is itself a signal — it suggests the handflute has a foundation for recognition by international cultural institutions. The Association plans to continue expanding its overseas outreach, and the UK trip was the starting point.
