Handflute Outreach Across the Strait: A Cultural Exchange at a Taiwanese Secondary School
First Handflute Talk at a Taiwanese Secondary School
In January 2026, the Association travelled to Taiwan and held its first handflute talk at a secondary school outside Hong Kong — Taitung County Donghai Junior High School.
The Taiwan trip was not limited to schools. The Association also ran workshops at several regional bookshops, guesthouses, and community centres, open to the general public. This localised approach gave the Association a chance to understand how the handflute is received across different cultural contexts.
The Awareness Gap Extends Beyond Hong Kong
One detail from the Taiwan visit is worth recording: after the workshops, some participants said they had tried blowing sounds with their cupped hands as children, but never knew it had a name — or that it could be learned as a skill. This shows that the awareness gap around handflute is not unique to Hong Kong; it exists widely across Chinese-speaking regions. The implication is that the Association's outreach work has a much larger potential scope.
